Art Is Life!

I am an art teacher and I'd love to teach about mixed-media collage! Anyone can attend this workshop and there is no level of expertise needed.

We'll create mini mixed-media collages. Participants will experiment with paint, fabric, newsprint and other found objects to create a unique piece of artwork based on their own theme. It's creative and fun! : )

Ages: 8 +Up

Materials: I'd love for the participants to bring any personal pictures or items that they would like to include in their collage. (This is optional. I will have loads of pictures for them to choose from)

They can create their collages on a piece of paper however, I will have 11x14 canvases available for $5.

About Your Teacher: A Native Rhode Islander and mother of two daughters, Makala Fields has served in education for over ten years. While residing in Rhode Island, she helped to organize and manage after-school programs at The Providence Black Repertory Theater, and also instructed youth dance workshops. Makala sincerely believes in the purposed destiny of every youth. She has helped approximately 150 youth in her native city during their transition from juvenile centers back into the community. Makala soon entered the field of education in 2002 in order to continue along her path in youth development.

Makala has pioneered fusing her passion for art, education, and youth into her instructional practice as she transitioned to Atlanta. She is a mixed media collage artist and art teacher, whose work has been featured in her own exhibit as well as a series of local exhibits in Atlanta. While teaching World Studies in KIPP schools, she designed and created an Art Connect class in which scholars successfully integrate creating artwork with demonstrating mastery of World Studies, ELA & Math skills.

Following her love for art, education and community, Makala has created a strong, visible presence in the Atlanta community through youth art exhibits, fashion shows, workshops and classes. Makala joined forces with “The Evolution of She” and organized the first annual She Is an Icon Awards, highlighting local SHE-ro’s and icons in the Atlanta area. Makala looks forward to further developing her talents and empowering others to do so as well.
